Introduction to Self Defense
Everyone should at least have an introduction to self defense.
Protection can take up many forms. It can be a response to a physical or sexual assault on yourself or another person. It could be dealing with an intruder into your home. It could be dealing with a verbal assault from an angry neighbor. It could be dealing with bullying of various types.
Whatever type it is that you are confronting, it is necessary to arm yourself with some good basic information and if you can, make some time to attend a course. Together these will increase your confidence and make you less of a target. Everyone needs an introduction to self defense.
At this point, let me just add that not all situations require a physical response but you have to use your mind to quickly assess the situation and decide on the appropriate action to take.
If you are simply expecting to receive a bunch of effective techniques and how to carry them out, you are right off the mark. However, you will be far from disappointed. Many people will realize that there is so much more than just learning physical techniques.
Violence may have affected your life as it has mine, then you will know that you cannot turn the clock back but must live with the consequences, good or bad.
I came to realize that physical techniques, however effective they appear, are no good without many other factors in place. For this reason, so after an Introduction to Self Defense, I will be covering many other aspects over a series of articles that should be given a high priority, on top of learning effective techniques.
I know exactly how it feels to have the odds stacked against you, to experience the effects of fear and your body's response to the inevitable adrenalin dump. I know how paralyzing the effects of fear and adrenalin can be and how they can invoke panic. The effects of adrenalin can be an experience all on its own. Your legs shaking, body shivering, dry mouth, impaired vision and hearing, the inability to carry out complex motor skills all add to the horror of an already bad situation.
What are you going to do? Despite all this going on, you still have to pull yourself together and take some action. If I had not had the honor of such experiences, then I certainly would not be passing on such information on today.
You need to discover belief, instincts, controlling fear, having a plan, avoiding panic, laws, avoidance, awareness, simplicity, primary targets, secondary targets, maximizing the effect of your strikes, establishing verbal control and so on. Knowing how to carry out physical techniques is important but all of these other areas are such an important part too, so do not ignore them.
These articles are deliberately kept very simple throughout so not to cause confusion to anyone with Science or big words so sit tight and I hope that you enjoy and benefit from reading an Introduction to Self Defense and my associated articles.
I do not train or film ourselves training in camouflage, or wear high-leg boots, a balaclava or report to a secret Military Command Centre. My only concern with that type of approach is that it can attract the wrong element. My approach is to educate everyday people like you and me and arm them with some good information and very simple, very effective techniques.
